Well, yesterday I brought my mother to her house in the mountains of NC for a couple of days. She loves to be here enjoying her home in Hayesville, puttering around the house, going to Georgia ( five miles away for cheaper gas) and eating at the lovely restaurant in Hiawassee. As we came into the house mlast night about 9 pm we each noticed the front door was wide open. Each of us thought the other had opened it. When we realized that had not happened, we were scared. Who was waiting for us in the closet? No one was under the beds or in the closets. Was anything missing? no Any food eaten? no
Only in Clay County, NC can you go off and leave your front door wide open for two months and no one will bother to go inside or mess with anything that belongs to you. It reminds me of a sad incident when I was a teenager and came here with my mother and my cat for the weekend. After driving for seven hours we arrived at the carport about 11 pm, we got out, and Mother discovered she did not have the house keys. She decided we needed to go sleep at a friend’s house down the road. We go there and walk in her unoccupied, unlocked house and sleep.
The sad part is that my cat leapt out of the car at our house and we couldn’t find her before we left for the friend’s house. We we returned the next morning I found her shot and dying in our driveway. I don’t know who shot her or why. A very sad day for me.
So this story has sad memories but yet amazingly it says something about the folks who live here. They might not like your cat howling in the night but they will open their home to you anytime and respect your property.
